The Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar (III) of Coimbra University and the Science Museum of Coimbra University has open a position for a research grant (BI) for 24 months starting on September 2010.

A research project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia to the Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar (III) of Coimbra University has available a position for a research grant to study the natural history collections of the University of Coimbra. The grantee will work with the natural history collections of Coimbra University. The main objective is to deepen the knowledge about the original collections and their development from the 1772 to 1911. The collections are associated with the original exhibition spaces, including the 18th century Natural History cabinet, which has been preserved to our days. The study of the objects and specimens of the collections will add to the history of science in relation to the constitution and scientific use of the natural history collections of the University of Coimbra. It will also constitute an important information source to the redisplay of the College of Jesus that consists of the 2nd phase of the Museum of Science development. The information gathered will add up in the database of the currently online Digital Museum. The work will focus on the history of the acquisition protagonists, collectors, teachers, donors into the collections and their use for scientific purposes.

Minimal qualifications:
Masters in Biological or Earth Sciences.

Special requirements:
Be familiar with natural history collections.
Very good knowledge of Portuguese language, as most material is written in Portuguese.

Evaluation:
Juri is constituted by Prof. Paulo Gama Mota, Director of the Science Museum, Prof. Carlota Simões, Vice-President of the Science Museum, and Dr. Pedro Casaleiro, museologist and member of the board of the Science Museum. Candidates will be evaluated by their CV and letter of motivation. The three best classified will be evaluated by interview.
