Research Studentship

"Dynamic Landscapes, Coastal Environments and Human Dispersals" (DISPERSE)
University of York, Department of Archaeology
Deadline for receipt of applications is 30 March 2012

The Department of Archaeology invites applications for a 3-year, fully funded research studentship in marine palaeoecology and isotope analysis, beginning in October 2012. The studentship is funded by the ERC DISPERSE Project, led by Professor Geoff Bailey in a joint initiative with the Institut de Physique du Globe, Paris.
The student will become a member of the project team, which currently comprises two postdoctoral fellows and one research student based in York, and a member of the wider research community of the newly established PALAEO Centre, a joint initiative between the Departments of Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry and the Hull-York Medical School. The Centre comprises a wide range of expertise and interests in human evolution and palaeoecology, including biomolecular approaches to archaeological problems and an active research group working on midden material in different parts of the world.
Further details are at: <http://www.york.ac.uk/archaeology/> and <http://www.york.ac.uk/palaeo/>
The studentship project is focussed on the Holocene shell mounds of the Farasan Islands in the southern Red Sea, and on the analysis of the substantial marine-mollusc assemblages recovered from recent excavations including samples already in hand and participation in fresh fieldwork to collect new samples.
We are looking for someone with an interest in the archaeological and palaeoclimatic interpretation of marine molluscs from archaeological sites, preferably with relevant field and laboratory experience and some knowledge of isotope geochemistry.

Applications including a curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests should be sent to:
